Welcome, Covie

Would be a shame if all this storm blew over, and Inksfall did not have a few words to say about it, isn’t it?

I, for one, am not sad that COVID-19 has struck in such a big way. I am a misanthrope and my misanthropy is no gimmick. I hate humans. Ergo, I like it when they die. The better if they die in thousands.

There are many windows to the world, here at my fingers. I watch the people react, I watch them say words of encouragement, words of hope, strength, compassion. I follow many good people on social media. Authors, columnists, cartoonists, social workers, fitness trainers, artists, humourists, athletes. My e-feed is charged with crackling positivity, boisterous energy. But this positivity does not cling to me. I pass through like a watcher, the lofty words rolling by like water rolling off a duck. No, I am not negative. I am only neutral.

I am an old disciple of The Matrix. I remember the proposition that Agent Smith submitted when he was talking to Morpheus bound to the chair. He said that we, humans, were not exactly normal beings.

I’d like to share a revelation that I’ve had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you’re not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You’re a plague and we are the cure.

It always made a lot of sense to me. Sure, technically we were mammals. But that’s not the actual point. The point Smith is making here is a valid one.

I said I follow some artists and cartoonists. A few of them have expressed the same idea in their works, as COVID-19 have been spreading over the world. They have shown Earth to be the suffering patient, and COVID-19 to be the miracle cure. – If we go by the ‘systems view’, this take is not wrong. Only a very biased, anthropocentric viewpoint could find anything wrong with it.

So if we are like a virus, and the COVID-19 is a virus, then I should think the two of us are very much alike.

Yes, of course, professionally, we are on opposing teams. But we play the same game, no?

I am coming to think of COVID-19 as a younger brother. A bit of rivalry, a whole lot of similarity. Welcome, junior. Hope you are here to stay awhile.
