who do you think is Holmes’ true foil in the canonical books? Its not Moriarty for me.I thought he was kind of a random insert to kill Holmes off.
I’ll go with Magnussen(or is it Magnusson?)The blackmailer. Holmes didn’t manage to “catch” him, and he was very much out of his depth when it came to legal ways to trap him.Plus, I hated him the most, but thats just a bonus.
Stapleton too was good, though too cracked. And the thieves in The Red-Headed League-Holmes got them, of course, but they were still ingenious.

Never thought about it, really. I am bad at reading books critically. I just listen to the story as the storyteller tells it. One thing, though. I never did understand why Irene Adler is seen as SUCH an extraordinary woman. She was smart and capable enough, yes, but she didn’t appear extraordinary to me.

Well, thats ok. I meant “best” as in which one you loved to hate the most, along with a slightly objective view. But its completely fine. Makes sense.

I think I hated Stapleton the most. One of the reasons could have been the butterflies.

Irene was never a huge focus in the books, and appeared only in one story. Even Moriarty, dangerous as he was, I felt we saw little of his intellect on page.

I think people like to play on a possible romantic connection between Irene Adler and Sherlock, whereas I feel that was probably not the point of her character. It was probably to show Sherlock’s attitude towards women and show her as a smart and capable as well as independent woman who earned his respect in one brief encounter, but that was it. As a contrast to the general view of women at that time, she showed that women can do it too.

One of the best antagonists for me is John Clay-that guy in the Red-Headed League. It’s one of my favorite tales in the entire canon, possibly my favorite.

I kind of repeated myself in one point due to following up after a long time, so you can ignore some of that bit.
